August 21st, 2006

In an effort to increase border security, the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) will require all persons entering the United States to hold a valid passport, including U.S. and Canadian citizens traveling between the two countries.  The passport requirement will be phased in, with air and sea travelers required to present a passport starting January 8, 2007.  The requirement will be extended to land ports of entry as well, with a proposed start date of January 2008.
